  9. Anything that improves the quality and efficiency of communication
  10. from authors to distributors is beneficial to both.  VENDINFO
  11. provides many features that assist with this:
  12.  
  13.    o  VENDINFO provides a very comprehensive coverage of the
  14.       information an author might want to communicate to
  15.       distributors.  The 750 fields of information in a VENDINFO
  16.       data record cover the whole range of relevant topics,
  17.       including product description; required platform; contact
  18.       information for author, ordering, and support; contact
  19.       information for other distributors of registered version;
  20.       prices and registration benefits; and detailed distribution
  21.       policy, both in general and for each of 13 distribution
  22.       channels.

  24.    o  The structuredness of the VENDINFO record -- and the editor
  25.       used to create it -- help the author avoid oversights.

  27.    o  The editor's extensive help system provides a veritable
  28.       "short course" on the industry for the relatively
  29.       inexperienced author.

  31.    o  Because the VendEdit editor has been designed to support the
  32.       import of information files from your regional distributors,
  33.       you will be able to easily include full and current contact
  34.       information for them, as well as information about accepted
  35.       forms of payment, and services provided.

  37.    o  Easy access to the descriptive information in the VENDINFO
  38.       file increases the chance that your own preferred descriptions
  39.       will be used in BBS databases, vendor catalogs, etc.  This
  40.       likelihood will become even greater as BBSes and BBS utilities
  41.       begin to provide internal support for the extraction of this
  42.       information.  Some 30 manufacturers of BBS and related
  43.       software have already committed to support VENDINFO, including
  44.       PCBOARD, Wildcat!, Major BBS, Searchlight BBS, and TBBS.

  46.    o  The ease with which distributors can test your distribution
  47.       policy, and the ease with which illegal distribution can be
  48.       detected, will put "teeth" into your distribution policies for
  49.       the first time.  No distributor will reasonably be able to
  50.       claim that "It's just too much work to examine the
  51.       distribution policies on all those products."

  53.    o  Just to make the point about "teeth" crystal clear, imagine
  54.       running a batch file that detects all "illegally distributed"
  55.       packages on an entire "pirate" CD-ROM, and automatically
  56.       creates and prints form letters inviting the authors to
  57.       participate in a class-action suit.  The VENDINFO system will
  58.       make this technically possible, for anyone so inclined.

  60.    o  At the author's option, it will soon be possible to "brand"
  61.       your executables with a brief VENDINFO record containing
  62.       product identification and author contact information, along
  63.       with your complete distribution policy.  This will insure
  64.       that your package can be tested for violation of its
  65.       distribution policy even if the VENDINFO.DIZ file has been
  66.       removed.  The VENDINFO "branding record" can be inside
  67.       your own CRC envelope, and thus protected from modification
  68.       or removal.  Furthermore, if you choose, you will be able
  69.       to protect the specific VENDINFO file from within the
  70.       executable, both by storing a verifiable CRC-like value
  71.       calculated from the file, and even by doing a run-time
  72.       test for its presence, if desired.

  74.    o  The VENDINFO Product Registry will provide visibility of your
  75.       products to distributors, journalists, and even individual
  76.       users who might not otherwise have discovered them.  It will
  77.       also provide an easy way to distribute screenshots, and perhaps
  78.       other artifacts related to your products.  It even provides a
  79.       possibility for you to realize a small additional income, by
  80.       sharing in the fees paid by distributors to use this service.

  82.    o  The VENDINFO record actually SAVES space in the distribution
  83.       package, because it's almost always smaller than the
  84.       VENDOR.DOC, SYSOP.DOC, READ_ME.DOC, and other files it
  85.       replaces.

  87.    o  The free VendView viewer will soon give users an ability to
  88.       access relevant information about your product from a pleasing,
  89.       menu-driven viewer.  It will even allow individual users to
  90.       test your product for "legality" of distribution, and for
  91.       changes not allowed by your distribution policy.  This will not
  92.       only increase user confidence, but may even result in users
  93.       putting pressure on distributors who violate authors'
  94.       distribution policies.
